I am a stroller hater.

And I love babies and children.

I have been a nanny for 11 years.

I love going to arts festivals and public places with infants and children.

How? Babywearing. Wraps, slings, pouches, mei-tais, an Ergo. Wearing babies from birth through pre-school age. No stroller required. Haven't used one in ten years.

I attended an art festival in pa several years ago, with my son, then 2, in a stroller! now not the monster car seat attachment kind, but a smaller, no frills one. there were so many people and sooo many strollers, the super huge extra sized ones, that it was almost impossible to move! we left, and decided to skip our once favorite art festival for the last several years because of the inability to move among the huge strollers with screaming kids in them! My son has been to such events, fancy restaraunts, and many other places since he was an infant! he learned to tolerate crowds, deal with noise and learned how to behave at a dinner table! We rarely leave a restaurant without being complimented on his good behavior. however, hes not perfect, and there are times when my now 5 year old is just not in a good mood for the occasion! if he starts whining, crying, or being disruptive, WE LEAVE!!! kids need to be exposed to things, but the PARENTS need to be responsible! If you are going to a place with a ton of people, and little space, invest in a 20 dollar umbrella stroller! they are very small, easily packed, and easy to sqeeze through tight spaces! If your child is tired, hungry. or otherwise unhappy, LEAVE!!! I have kids, but i do not want to hear yours scream! Stupid, irresponsible, PARENTS are the reason the rest of us cannot take our well behaved,non screaming kids, in their small strollers to restaurants, art festivals ect!

I did a marathon reading of Ulysses on Bloomday at the Irish Times in D.C. A few years ago. Cool event: writers, poets, diplomats took turns reading chapters. I followed with my copy of the book, Guinness in front of me. Looking at my marginalia later, I'm sure by the 20th hour, I was hallucinating.

Hi Kathleen, thanks for reading! A while back, I wrote a post about visiting the Keys with Kids: http://www.miamibabymama.com/2009/07/visiting-florida-keys-with-kids.html

In the post I talk about things to do in the Keys, and also about my personal favorite place to stay in Key West, which is Rose Lane Villas. This place is great because it is really well-located (right off Duval in a great area of Old Town) but is still nice and quiet and private. The previous post has a link to their website and more info. If your stepdaughter wants something more resort-y and upscale, I recommend Casa Marina for sure.

She just never liked it. Second of all, I have a bad back. I have a regular ONE BABY Graco stroller that I put my baby in when we're going somewhere that involves a lot of walking, like the mall, because she's a heavy little thing (no not overweight, just not light) and I can't hold her for long periods of time unless I'm sitting somewhere that has back support.

Competition for space in this overpopulated world makes people mean and feel entitled to whatever space they can grab, at the expense of anyone else needing the same space. Let's stop having so many kids in the first place, and in the second, if you have to take your kids in public with you, then carry them around in one of those little bundle things next to your body, and let them walk when you need a break. The kids will feel more secure, and you will be respecting everybody else's space.

It's a common courtesty issue. I can see being weary of strollers as a lot of people operate them cluelessly. Or expect you to yield to them in a tight space and get miffed when you stand your ground and proceed forward. I, an able body single travelling man, will be able to navigate a crowd faster than a parent with a stroller. Happens in a lot of places, especially malls, supermarkets, festivals, any place with a good sized crowds. And I don't remember it being like this. Only in the last 15 years or so....

Hello everyone!
My 2 cents: Problems arise when people don't think first or are not considerate of others. Double and triple wide/long strollers are not suitable for large gatherings or crowded public places. Imagine taking a very large/long stroller through YOUR FRIEND'S crowed barbeque
filled to capacity with people of every age - and especially the elderly - and just plowing through the crowd. Come on. Common courtesy wins the day. As for the "kids on airplanes" issue, there is a BIG difference between caring for a hurting child and IGNORING a loud crying unhappy child. I have personally suffered through hours and hours (at least two different flights) where the PARENTS LEFT a crying/wailing child with a sibling and WENT TO ANOTHER, quieter SEAT, leaving the rest us us to deal with the negligence!! That should NEVER be tolerated!!

Wow. I can't imagine going out with my baby without the stroller, but then again, I'm only going to take her to family friendly events like festivals...

I think the issue is inconsiderate people and also people with no manners. First of all, if you're going anywhere with large crowds (especially in Miami) you're GOING to get bumped into by SOMEONE. It may be a stroller, it may be a teenager, adult or a senior citizen with their walker...it may even be a wheel chair or one of those speedy moterized scooters for the elderly. What makes a difference is attitude.
I'm not saying I don't get annoyed if someone bumps into me but if it was obvious that they 1) WERE watching were they were going, not walking/running blindly while looking in another direction or texting or talking to someone and 2) APOLOGIZE for bumping into me, then guess what? I let it go!

Now if you are walking around, stroller or no stroller, without any care or regard for the people you KEEP bumping into or running over and/or you bump into people and don't have the courtesy to apologize - I think you should be banned from walking in a crowd of civilized people who do have regard for others.

That being said, if someone makes a human error and accidentally bumps into you, they don't look like they were being completely careless, and they apologize for the inconvinience - does it really matter what kind of baggage they bumped you with? YOU'RE IN A CROWDED AREA! MISTAKES HAPPEN! IT'S PART OF THE EXPERIENCE! MOVE ON AND LET IT GO! Otherwise, stay home so you don't have to worry about anyone bumping into you, stroller or not.

I personally am much more annoyed by people who carry around big/long, sharp/pointy objects and aren't being mindful that they don't accidentally stab someone with them or people in a large group who decide that the perfect place to STOP and talk is in THE MIDDLE OF A PATH/WALKWAY where everyone's trying to get through. You wouldn't stop in the middle of a street or expressway and stop the flow of traffic, you'd pull over to the side of the road!

Ugh. Parents. The main problem is the SIZE of the strollers. Everything today has to be supersized; some of these strollers are bigger than my car!!!
